Illegal Art
Saturday September 25th
Soapbox Saturday Cabaret
6pm - 7:30pm
Illegal Art is a re-enactment of Henry "Box" Brown's successful escape from a Virgina plantation. Brown was a 19th Century slave who arranged to have himself mailed to Philadelphia abolitionists in a dry goods container. Much like Brown, undocumented workers undergo perilous journeys to industrialized countries, many former colonial powers, promising freedom of expression, religion, and press to its citizens and the world. With the risk of being singled out, arrested and physically harmed, Illegal Art takes a closer look at drastic measures left to undocumented workers trying to cross borders after legislation of Arizona's SB 1070 law.
For 1 hour, Alicia Grullon will be in a custom designed art crate re-enacting Brown's mailing, as an undocumented worker in a 21st Century. Audience members will witness an example of conditions many people from Third World countries undergo to find work, study, and be with family in First World economies.
